Five FCC Champions Qualify For 2017 Mazda Scholarship Opportunities

The Formula Car Challenge season finale took place this past weekend at Auto Club Speedway. The double-header races counted towards the West Coast championship, and the Triple Crown National Championship. "The races were spectacular." noted Series Official Ben Hettema. "and drivers in all three classes were shooting for some big Mazda sponsored scholarship opportunities which made for some exciting finishes."
Saturday October 29th Podiums:
- Formula Mazda – Bill Weaver 1st, Brad Drew 2nd, Austen Charles 3rd
- FormulaSPEED – Jonathan Sugianto 1st, Carter Williams 2nd, Tao Takaoka 3rd
- Pro Formula Mazda – Robin Shute 1st, Sting Ray Robb 2nd, Jim Mali 3rd
Sunday October 30th Podiums:

After the final race on Sunday the teams celebrated the season in one of the Corporate Suites at Auto Club Speedway. "We have to thank all of the competitors who participated this season," added Hettema. "We had 39 unique racers participate in our events this season, and that made for some very exciting racing. Of course it also couldn't have been as successful without the help of our marketing partners; Mazda, Goodyear, Molecule, Star Race Cars, Red Line Oil, GoPro, Wine Country Motorsports, and NASA."

By winning these championships Carneiro and Sugianto became semi-finalists in the $200,000 Mazda Road to Indy and Shute, Weaver, and Williams became semi-finalists in the Mazda Road to 24 $100,000 Scholarship Shootout. "Our series and drivers really appreciate that Mazda recognizes the FCC presented by Goodyear as being worthy of the MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development Driver ladder programs," stated Series Official Mark Milazzo. "We also really appreciate the amount of investment that Mazda makes into the sport we all love."
The series heads back to Southern California next, for the FCC Winter Series opening weekend on the Auto Club Speedway road course January 14th-15th. The 2017 regular season schedule is currently being finalized, and will be posted in an upcoming newsletter later this month.
