The Formula Car Challenge presented by Goodyear visited WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca this past weekend for Rounds 9 and 10 of the Pro FM and Formula Mazda class championships. The weather was clear, with highs in the 70’s, as the FCC competitors rolled on track to start the three day event.
In the Pro FM class Jay Horak was the driver to catch all weekend, and he secured both wins which got him closer to the points leader John Purcell. Purcell finished both races in second, so he didn’t lose too much of an advantage. The interest story in the PFM class was the return of Larry Schnur. Schnur hadn’t competed in the series in over ten years. Back then, he was a regular podium finisher. While on his hiatus Schnur has been racing bicycles competitively, and also secured a Porsche GT3 Cup Championship. He wasted no time in getting a 2019 FCC trophy with his 3rd place finish on Sunday.
“It was great to see so many open wheel racers attending this weekend. We had a great showing with 65% of the cars in Group 8 fighting for FCC points,” noted Series Official Craig DiGrazia. “IndyCar is back here in September, and it feels like the interest in formula car racing is on a big upswing in our region. Both of our races were filled with excitement, and the paddock was filled with camaraderie, overall this was another great weekend.”
In the Formula Mazda class points leader Bill Weaver secured both wins and really stretched out his points lead. There was a return of sorts in the FM paddock as well. The last time the series saw Todd McAllister, he was celebrating a podium finish at the 2012 FCC season finale. At this event, McAllister’s son Owen decided to follow in dad’s footsteps and secured a podium of his own. It was his first in the series, in only his second weekend of competition.
